Overview
The Salkantay Trek is one of the most spectacular trekking routes in Peru to reach Machu Picchu, ideal for travelers seeking adventure, nature, and a deep connection with Andean landscapes.
During 5 days, you will travel through breathtaking scenery ranging from high snow-capped mountains to the cloud forest. The route will take you to iconic places such as Humantay Lake, the impressive Salkantay Snow Mountain one of the most sacred peaks in the Andes and the highest point of the trek, located at over 4,600 m (15,090 ft) above sea level. As you progress, the environment changes dramatically into warmer areas filled with lush vegetation, rivers, and waterfalls.
Along the way, you will also interact with local communities and living traditions, making this experience much more than just a hike: it is a cultural immersion into the Peruvian Andes.
The journey continues through areas such as Santa Teresa and the archaeological site of Llactapata, from where you will enjoy a unique view of Machu Picchu before visiting it. Finally, you will complete the experience by exploring the majestic Inca citadel with a professional guide.
Considered one of the best alternatives to the Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek has been recognized by National Geographic as one of the best hikes in the world. It is a perfect option for those who wish to enjoy an authentic experience while crossing diverse ecosystems in just a few days.
Our service includes specialized guides, complete logistics, and carefully selected campsites to provide safety, comfort, and an unforgettable experience at every stage of the journey.
Full itinerary
- We will begin the adventure with pickup from your hotel in Cusco around 04:00 hrs. We will travel by tourist transportation to Mollepata and Challacancha, the starting point of the hike.
- From here, we will begin a gradual hike toward Soraypampa, our first campsite, surrounded by impressive Andean landscapes and views of the Salkantay and Humantay snow-capped mountains.
- In the afternoon, we will hike to the famous Humantay Lake, known for its turquoise waters and stunning mountain surroundings. Afterwards, we will return to the campsite to rest and enjoy dinner under a starry sky
- This will be the most challenging and one of the most impressive days of the trek. After breakfast, we will begin the ascent to the highest point of the trek: Salkantay Pass, located at 4,630 m (15,190 ft) above sea level, at the foot of the majestic Salkantay Snow Mountain.
- From this point, you will enjoy unique panoramic views of the mountain range. We will then begin the descent into the cloud forest area, where the landscape changes completely into a warmer and greener environment.
- Finally, we will arrive in Chaullay, where we will spend the night.
- After breakfast, we will continue the hike through the high jungle, surrounded by tropical vegetation, rivers, waterfalls, and local crops such as coffee, bananas, and avocados.
- During the journey, we will visit local communities and have the opportunity to tour a coffee plantation in Lucmabamba, where you will learn about the coffee production process.
- This day is more relaxed, ideal for enjoying the natural surroundings and biodiversity of the region.
- In the morning, we will begin the ascent to the archaeological site of Llactapata, from where you will enjoy a unique and uncommon view of Machu Picchu.
- We will then descend to the Hidroeléctrica area, where we will have lunch. From here, we will continue walking (or optionally by train) to Aguas Calientes.
- Upon arrival, you will check into your hotel to rest before the most anticipated day
- Very early in the morning, we will head to Machu Picchu to enter during one of the first schedules and enjoy the site with fewer visitors.
- You will enjoy a guided tour of approximately 2 hours through the main sectors of the citadel, where you will learn about its history, architecture, and significance.
- At the end of the tour, you will have free time to explore on your own or enjoy optional hikes such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (not included and subject to availability).
- In the afternoon, we will return by train to Ollantaytambo and then by private transportation to Cusco, where the service ends.
